A Walk Through Our History and Treasures

We invite you to watch a special video presentation by our Parish Priest, Fr. Fergal McDonagh, who takes us on a guided walk through the history and unique artefacts of Our Lady of Dolours Church, Dolphin’s Barn.

Highlights from the Walk-Through

A Church with Deep Roots
The present church, built in 1893, is the fourth to stand on this historic site. The first was a simple wooden barn, followed by a brick church, and finally the striking granite building that still serves our parish community today.

Extensions and Architecture
In the 1960s, the church was extended, almost doubling its size. Care was taken to match the granite stonework and roof tiles so closely that it is difficult to see where the original building ends and the extension begins.

Commemorating the Fallen
The parish remembers with reverence the 32 young men from Dolphin’s Barn who died during the First World War. Among them were two pairs of brothers, and the youngest, who was only 16. Poppy wreaths are displayed in their memory.

Sacred Artefacts
The church treasures include a monstrance dating from 1712—the oldest in Dublin and the second oldest in the diocese. The stained glass windows, crafted by the father of renowned artist Harry Clarke, are another remarkable feature, with the original drawings preserved in Trinity College.

Signs of Parish Life
The four confession boxes once served as a sign of the many priests who ministered here. Today, Fr. Fergal continues that tradition of service as the parish priest of Dolphin’s Barn.

A Gift of Remembrance
One of the more unusual artefacts is a painting commissioned by the widow of a commanding officer who died in battle, depicting their chaplain giving a blessing. This work was presented to the parish by the Royal British Legion.

Partnership and Welcome
Dolphin’s Barn Parish works in close partnership with the parishes of Rialto and Donore Avenue. The church is open daily from early morning until late evening, offering a place of welcome and prayer for all who visit.
